Life at Brenkley Doctoral College
The Doctoral Experience
A doctorate is a long journey. We are committed to making that journey intellectually stimulating, practically manageable, and deeply supported. Here is what you can expect as a Brenkley Doctoral College researcher.
Learning Environment
Your Online Learning Platform
Brenkley Doctoral College operates through a purpose-built online learning environment designed for doctoral-level study. The platform integrates structured learning pathways, direct supervisor communication, submission management, and access to research resources — all in one place.
Our platform is built around the realities of part-time study. There are no fixed lecture times. Materials are available 24/7, live sessions are recorded, and your academic timeline is tracked and visible to both you and your supervisor at all times.
The platform connects directly to major academic databases, including access to thousands of peer-reviewed journals relevant to your research area. Brenkley Doctoral College provides full library access as part of your programme fee — there are no additional database subscriptions to purchase.
Academic Library Access
Full access to EBSCO, JSTOR, Emerald Insight, Sage Journals, and Taylor & Francis collections, included in your programme fee.
Structured Learning Pathways
Year-by-year learning frameworks guide you through research design, methods training, ethics, writing, and submission preparation.
Live Sessions, Always Recorded
All live webinars, workshops, and supervision group sessions are recorded and available in your archive within 24 hours.
Progress Dashboard
A clear visual tracker shows your progress against milestones, upcoming deadlines, and supervisory meeting log — always up to date.
Supervision
Supervisor Matching
The supervisory relationship is at the heart of doctoral education. At Brenkley Doctoral College, we take supervisor matching seriously — it is not an administrative afterthought. Before you enrol, the Academic Lead for Research & Enterprise leads a careful process to identify the supervisor whose expertise, methods background, and working style is the best fit for your research.
Expert Matching
Your supervisor is selected based on alignment between their research expertise and your proposed topic, ensuring intellectually rich supervision from day one.
Primary and Second Supervisor
Every researcher has both a primary supervisor and a second supervisor. The second supervisor provides methodological support and continuity if your primary supervisor is unavailable.
Regular Meetings
You have a guaranteed minimum of eight supervisor meetings per year, typically fortnightly or monthly depending on your stage. All meetings are logged and minuted on the platform.
Group Supervision
In addition to individual meetings, each supervisor group holds quarterly peer sessions. These are invaluable for developing your voice, giving and receiving feedback, and building peer relationships.
Supervision Contract
At the start of your programme, you and your supervisors co-create a supervision contract setting out expectations, communication norms, and meeting frequency. This document is revisited at each annual review.
Change Process
If a supervisory relationship is not working, Brenkley Doctoral College has a clear, confidential process for reviewing and if necessary changing supervision arrangements. Researcher welfare always comes first.
Community
Peer Community
Doctoral research can be isolating. At Brenkley Doctoral College, we actively counter that by building a genuine community of peer researchers who support, challenge, and inspire each other throughout the journey.
Your cohort — the group of researchers who started in the same intake period as you — forms the core of your peer community. You will share an orientation programme, methods training cohort sessions, and ongoing peer learning circles throughout your studies.
Beyond your cohort, you have access to the wider Brenkley Doctoral College researcher forum, where over 100 active researchers share resources, ask questions, and offer support across all stages of doctoral study.
Cohort Learning Circles
Monthly peer-led discussion sessions focused on shared challenges — from literature reviews to ethics applications to the experience of writing up.
Writing Retreats
Online and in-person concentrated writing days, facilitated but unstructured. Researchers come together to write, share a brief update, and stay accountable to their goals.
Annual Symposium
Our annual gathering of the entire Brenkley Doctoral College research community — researchers, supervisors, and alumni — for presentations, workshops, and connection. See the Symposium page.
Welfare
Pastoral Support
Doctoral study, alongside a professional career, is demanding. We know that, and we take our duty of care seriously. Brenkley Doctoral College's pastoral framework is led by Dr. Liz Blower, Academic Lead for Operations & Finance, and is designed to support researchers at every stage.
Annual Pastoral Review
Once per year, every researcher has a dedicated meeting with the Academic Lead for Operations & Finance to discuss wellbeing, progress, and anything that may be affecting their studies — separate from academic supervision.
Open-Door Policy
Researchers can contact Dr. Liz Blower or the Student Experience team at any time if they are experiencing difficulties. We aim to respond to all welfare-related contacts within one working day.
Interruption of Studies
Life happens. Brenkley Doctoral College has a straightforward process for interrupting studies for health, professional, or personal reasons, without financial penalty during approved interruption periods.
External Referral
Where researchers need support beyond academic pastoral care, we provide referrals to appropriate external counselling, occupational health, or disability support services.
