Study On Your Terms

The Online PhD at Brenkley Doctoral College is designed for researchers who need maximum flexibility. All learning is asynchronous — there are no fixed lecture times. Live supervision meetings are scheduled at mutually convenient times, including evenings and weekends where needed. Residential attendance is optional, not mandatory.

You choose between a standard three-year track and an extended track of up to six years. The extended track is ideal for professionals whose work responsibilities make standard pace impractical. Both tracks meet the same academic standards and award the same qualification.

The Online PhD is our most internationally accessible programme. We have supervised researchers in the UK, Europe, the Middle East, East Africa, and Southeast Asia. Time zone differences are accommodated in supervision scheduling.

No Compromise on Quality

Flexibility does not mean lower standards. The Online PhD at Brenkley Doctoral College is a full doctoral degree, requiring an original and significant contribution to knowledge in your field. The thesis is examined by an independent external examiner and an internal examiner in a viva voce examination.

All the academic support structures that apply to our residential programmes apply equally to Online PhD researchers — supervision logging, annual review milestones, methods training, library access, and peer community.

Same qualification: The Online PhD is examined to the same standard as any other Brenkley Doctoral College doctoral award. There is no distinction on your qualification certificate between online and residential study.

Flexible But Structured

The Online PhD is structured around three broad phases, each with clear milestones. Flexible pace means you can move through phases faster or slower than standard — within agreed parameters and with supervisor support. Phase 1 is delivered by Brenkley Doctoral College; Phases 2 and 3 are completed at the partner university you progress to.

The Phase 1 internship can be hosted by your own employer if you are already working, or arranged through our employer network if you need a placement — see how the internship works.

You Choose Your Partner University

On successful completion of Year 1, you choose which partner university you progress to for Years 2 and 3, rather than being assigned one. Brenkley Doctoral College maintains progression arrangements with a network of partner universities; final admission is confirmed through each university's own admissions and articulation process, not guaranteed automatically.

No obligation to progress: Year 1 stands on its own as the Extended Advanced Diploma — a complete, SCQF-rated qualification with an applied internship. Progression to Years 2–3 is optional and by choice.
