About Stanley

Professor Stanley Oliver is the founding Director of Brenkley Doctoral College. His career spans academic research, executive education, and senior consultancy across the private, public, and third sectors. Before establishing Brenkley Doctoral College, he held positions at two UK business schools and served as a non-executive director for a major housing association and a national charity.

Stanley's academic work centres on strategic decision-making — specifically, how leaders in complex, multi-stakeholder organisations make and communicate high-stakes decisions under conditions of genuine uncertainty. His research draws on theories of organisational sensemaking, principal-agent relationships, and strategic cognition, and his empirical work has spanned financial services, healthcare, higher education, and public sector contexts.

He is a committed advocate for practitioner-research as a distinct and valuable form of scholarly inquiry. His view — developed through supervision of over thirty doctoral researchers to completion — is that the most important management research questions are often held by people inside organisations, and that the practitioner-researcher has a structural advantage in addressing them that the academic researcher cannot replicate.

At Brenkley Doctoral College, Stanley provides strategic leadership, sits on the Academic Board, chairs the Admissions Committee, and maintains an active supervision portfolio. He speaks regularly at conferences on doctoral education, practitioner research, and the future of management knowledge.
